PROCEDURE TEXT

Before I explain about this text, I want to ask you, Do you like cooking? Cooking is something that usually we do every day, especially for woman. Cooking can be enjoyable activity if we like it but there are some people lazy to cook or even afraid because they cannot make delicious food. To help them, people who cannot cook can see recipes. Recipes are very helpful. When we want to make delicious food, we need recipe because there are steps that can lead us to do it. Recipe is an example of procedure text.
Another example is book instruction. When you buy a new TV or a new phone cell, there must be a book instruction in the box. Book instruction is also one of the examples of procedure text. When you want to download something from the internet, there are steps before we do that. Those steps are also procedure text. Then, what is procedure text actually?
Procedure text is a text that explains or helps us how to make or use something. Its social function is to describe how something is completely done through a sequence of steps. Communicative purpose of this text is to describe how something is made through a sequence of actions or steps.
There are three generic structures in procedure text. The first is goals or purposes. The second is materials or tools. The third and the last are steps or methods. To know the text that we read is procedure or not is so simple. You can read the title of it. If the title is started with ‘how to make…’ or ‘how to use…’ it can be certainly defined that the text is procedure text.
๐Definition of Procedure Text
There are three definition about procedure text :
(1)Texts that explain how something works or how to use instruction / operation manuals e.g. how to use the video, the computer, the tape recorder, the photocopier, the fax.
(2) Texts that instruct how to do a particular activity e.g. recipes, rules for games, science experiments, road safety rules.
(3) Texts that deal with human behavior, e.g how to live happily, how to succeed.
๐ The following are the characteristics of procedure text .
● Using the simple present tense
●Using imperative sentences (command sentences). Example: add two spoons , cook with low heat , blend the spices , etc.
●Using action verbs . Example: add, put, turn .
●Using numbering . Example: first, second, third .
●Using conjunctions (connecting words). Example: next, then, while .
●Using adverbs ( adverbs ) to clarify the stages that are passed. Example: correctly, carefully, slowly, for 2 minutes , etc.
๐ Generic structure of procedure text
# Goal : (e.g : How to make spaghetti)
# Material or Ingredient : (e.g : the material to cook omelette are egg, onion, vegetable oil, etc. )
# Step : (e.g : first, wash the tomatoes, onion, …., second cut the onions becomes slice. . . )
๐Purpose of Procedure Text
– To explain/tell (the reader) how to make/operate/do something through a sequence of actions or steps.
– To explain steps/instruction to make/operate/do something.
๐Language Feature of Procedure Text
– Use adverbial of sequence / Using temporal conjunction (e.g: first, second, third, the last)
– Use command / imperative sentence (e.g : put the noodles on the . . ., cut the onion. . ., wash the tomatoes. . . )
– Using adverbials (Adverbs) to express detail the time, place, manner accurate, for example, for five minutes, 2 hours, etc.
– Using action verbs, e.g : make, take, boil, cook
– Using Simple Present Tense.

In this learning activity 2, you will practice compiling related procedure texts
technology usage manual and tips (tips). But first you have to
study the linguistic elements in the text. Try you guys๐
๐Here is the structure of the procedure text
■Goal/Aim : contains the intent and purpose of the related procedure text .
■Materials : contains the materials needed to perform the steps of a procedure text .
■Steps : a list of sequential steps to complete the procedure text steps .
■Result : the result of the steps that have been carried out.
❣Read and understand the following material descriptions:
1. Imperative
Imperative sentence is a sentence that is used to make
command, request, or instruction.
Imperative sentences generally end with an exclamation but can also be ends by a period. In the usual imperative sentence procedural texts used is what functions as an instruction (instruction) and command (command).
๐There is also a negative imperative that serves to show that we
not allowed to do anything. Take a look at some examples imperative sentence below.
๐ขAdd a glass of coconut milk into a pan and then boil it.
๐ขDo not spray water on the control panel of the washing machine.
๐ขRemove the toner cartridge carefully.
๐ขServe it warmly in the rice bowl
2. Must and Mustn't
Must is used to express that we have to do something important
e.g. : You must press the on button to start the machine.
Mustn't is used to express that we are forbidden to do something.
e.g. You musn't refill the ink before it runs out.
3. Sentence Connectors for Telling Actions in Order.
Connectors are used to join groups of words, both phrases and sentence. You can use these connectors to link paragraphs to be coherent. Sentence connectors are usually written at the beginning of a sentence. Try to read and study the example paragraph below carefully.

4. Adverbs
Adverb is a word that describes a verb, adjective or adverb other. An adverb usually consists of an adjective + ly such as slowly, suddenly, strongly.
